What could go wrong?

San Francisco spent $800,000 last year for 2 million syringes to be given free to drug abusers in the hope that users would turn in old syringes and help lessen the spread of blood-borne diseases.

As of today they don’t even have any reliable data on how many used syringes were actually returned. Surprise.

People are beginning to notice that the city’s parks are becoming dumping grounds for used syringes. Surprise.

Someone remarks that "people with used needles don’t have much civic consciousness - especially when they’re high." Surprise.

So why not place "biohazard boxes" in the park so users could drop their used syringes there?

No, a parks spokesman says, "Many people are completely against that route. The questions are: ‘Do we really want them in the bathrooms? What if a kid popped one open or they were vandalized?’ "

Mayor Gavin Newsom is steaming mad. Surprise?

Meanwhile, since it's working so well in San Francisco, New Jersey is deciding to do the same thing.

Theory of Everything

Contrary to what many physicists have claimed in the popular press, we have had a Theory of Everything for about thirty years. Most physicists dislike this Theory of Everything because it requires the universe to begin in a singularity. That is, they dislike it because the theory is consistent only if God exists, and most contemporary scientists are atheists. They don’t want God to exist, and if keeping God out of science requires rejecting physical laws, well, so be it.

A Canadian Doctor Describes How Socialized Medicine Doesn’t Work

I was once a believer in socialized medicine. As a Canadian, I had soaked up the belief that government-run health care was truly compassionate. What I knew about American health care was unappealing: high expenses and lots of uninsured people.

My health care prejudices crumbled on the way to a medical school class. On a subzero Winnipeg morning in 1997, I cut across the hospital emergency room to shave a few minutes off my frigid commute.

True, government bureaucrats would be able to cut costs — but only by shrinking access to health care, as in Canada, and engendering a Canadian-style nightmare of overflowing emergency rooms and yearlong waits for treatment.

Hate Crimes

"Hate-crimes laws are based on the fallacious premise that we may be punished for our thoughts and feelings, not just our actions. And insisting the state has the ability to look into our hearts and minds and adjust the contents is a very dangerous line to cross. It gives legislators, the courts, and human-rights tribunals far too much power to decide what emotions and beliefs are acceptable and, more ominously, which are not. Such power will inevitably be corrupted to the service of keeping legitimate opposition quiet."

Changing Face of Europe

Across Europe, the Continent’s fastest-growing religion is establishing its public presence after decades in basements and courtyards, changing not only the architectural look of cities, but also their social fabrics.

Hailed by many as a sign of Muslim integration, the phenomenon is also feared as evidence of a parallel Islamic world threatening Europe’s Christian culture.

Letter to Editor

From the Austin American-Statesman

We have become Mexico

Elements of the American right like to fret about the growing Hispanic influence in the United States. Presumably the fear is that we will become excessively Mexican.

It is ironic that their man in Washington, President Bush (really Dick Cheney/Karl Rove), has been largely successful in transforming the American political system into a copy of that of Mexico.

Today, we have a presidente that largely represents an entrenched oligarchy; displays public contempt for the rule of law; has stacked the courts, not with conservatives, but essentially monarchists; has filled the federal bureaucracy with cronies; and has persuaded the American people that he has personal and sole ownership of the American armed forces. To this we add a Congress full of either loyalists or a confused and timid opposition.

In short, we have become Mexico (actually, in fairness, the opposition in Mexico seems less timid and confused).

North American Union

Some believe that the North American Union is an evolving organization similar to the European Union that will combine Canada, Mexico, and the United States into a single political entity.

Phyllis Schlafly believes there are certain facts about the supposed North American Union that "cannot be disputed," and that when you "connect the dots," people will get the big picture.

She said some of the key dates in this process were:

· April 2001. President Bush endorses the "Declaration of Quebec City," featuring a commitment to "hemispheric integration."

· March, 2005. Bush and the leaders of Canada and Mexico announce the Security and Prosperity Partnership.

· May 2005. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) issues its report endorsing creation by 2010 of a North American economic and security "community" with a common security "perimeter," open borders to facilitate the movement of trade, capital and people, and a North American "tribunal" to resolve trade disputes.

· June 2005. Former Carter Administration official Robert Pastor presents the plan to a sympathetic session of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, then-headed by Senator Richard Lugar.

· March 2006. Bush and the leaders of Mexico and Canada hold another meeting, calling it the · "first anniversary" of the SPP.

· May 2006. Bush gives speech calling for "comprehensive immigration reform."

· 2007. The Senate immigration bill is introduced, with a provision calling for the acceleration of the SPP.

Leftism as Psychopathy

"...it is my contention that this type is eerily reminiscent of a well-known psychiatric category: The psychopath. So the ULTIMATE explanation for all the core characteristics of Leftism that have been described so far lies in many Leftists being sub-clinical psychopaths."

"The characteristics of the clinical psychopath can be summed up as follows: He is not obviously "mad"; he is often highly intelligent; he is unmoved by brutality (except to enjoy perpetrating it); he has no moral or ethical anchors or standards; he secretly despises others and thinks they are fit only to be dominated and exploited by him and those like him; he is a great manipulator who loves getting others to do his bidding by deception or otherwise; he is the master of the lie and the false pretence but sees no reason to be consistent from occasion to occasion; he will say anything to gain momentary praise or admiration; his only really strongly felt emotions seem to be hate and contempt and he is particularly enraged by those who have what he wants and will be totally unscrupulous in trying to seize what others have for himself. But above all, the psychopath does not seem to be able to tell right from wrong and, as a result, does sometimes commit or connive at murders and other heinous crimes with what seems to be a clear conscience."

Dispatches from the Mommy Wars

Are full-time working moms losing the battle?

"The study, based on a survey of over 2000 people, found that only 21 percent of working mothers with children under 18 said that the ideal situation for them was to work full-time—an 11-point drop from 1997. While working mothers in 2007 were no more likely than a decade earlier to favor full-time motherhood (about one in five chose this as the ideal option), the percentage naming part-time employment as their top preference had risen from 48 percent in 1997 to 60 percent today. (In reality, only about a quarter of working mothers have part-time jobs.)"

Europe, the Killer Continent

"(T)he notion that Europe, the continent that’s exported more death and destruction than any other, is going to just shuffle wimpily to its doom is crazy. The Europeans have been playing pacifist dress-up while [America] protected them, but, sufficiently threatened, they’ll revert to their historical pattern – which is to over-react. Europe’s Muslims may prove to be the real endangered species; after all, Europe’s history of dealing with rejected minorities veers between genocide and, for the lucky, ethnic cleansing. For me, the question isn’t whether Muslims will take over Europe, but whether Europe will simply expel them or kill any number of them first. Sound far-fetched? How would the Holocaust have sounded to an educated German (or Brit, or American) in 1932? Europe is a killer continent. When the chips are down, it will kill again."

One night, after a couple had retired for the night, the woman became aware that her husband was touching her in a most unusual manner. He started by running his hand across her shoulders and the small of her back. He ran his hand over her breasts, touching them very lightly. Then, he proceeded to run his hand gently down her side, sliding his hand over her stomach, and then down the other side to a point below her waist.

He continued on, gently feeling her hips, first one side and then the other. His hand ran further down the outside of her thighs. His gentle probing then started up the inside of her left thigh, stopped and then returned to do the same to her right thigh. By this time the woman was becoming aroused and she squirmed a little to better position herself.

The man stopped abruptly and rolled over to his side of the bed. "Why are you stopping darling?" she whispered.

He whispered back, "I found the remote!"

God Bless You, Dianne Feinstein

After presiding over a Senate hearing today, Sen. Dianne Feinstein has decided to ask President Bush to commute the sentences of former U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, an aide for the California Democrat told World News Daily.

"Chicago Schools worse than Iraq"

Nearly three dozen Chicago students have been killed this year, according to Chicago Public Schools. Obama said that figure is higher than the number of Illinois serviceman who’ve died in Iraq in 2007.

Muslims in India

Who says there is no good news? This story is one small example. Perhaps there really are moderate muslims....

"Indian Muslim leaders are uniting with female students in opposition to a "fatwa" or Islamic edict demanding that Muslim girls stay away from academic institutions where boys are studying."

College President Fired

I wonder why the nightly news broadcasts missed this story....

"Three Eastern Michigan University administrators, including the president, have been forced out, months after top school officials were accused of covering up the rape and slaying of a student by publicly ruling out foul play."

Death by Stoning

Iran’s chief prosecutor Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabad has defended the death penalty by stoning describing it as a "wise measure".

"Death by stoning and all the measures contained in the Sharia (Islamic law) are wise measures’ he said in speech delivered Monday in Zanjan, a town located some 200 kilometres west of the capital Tehran.

No party label for Democrat scandals

EU versus USA

"If the European Union were a state in the USA it would belong to the poorest group of states. France, Italy, Great Britain and Germany have lower GDP per capita than all but four of the states in the United States. In fact, GDP per capita is lower in the vast majority of the EU-countries (EU 15) than in most of the individual American states. This puts Europeans at a level of prosperity on par with states such as Arkansas, Mississippi and West Virginia. Only the miniscule country of Luxembourg has higher per capita GDP than the average state in the USA. The results of the new study represent a grave critique of European economic policy."

Optical Illusion

Do you like optical illusions? Here is one that challenges our ability to discern color.

Spain wants to overlook Cuba’s human rights violations

This blogger has known several Cuban Americans and none of us have ever understood the love of Cuban tyranny by leftists in American and Europe. So naturally this story caught my eye....

"Spain lobbied hard but failed to persuade other EU members of the merits of overlooking human rights violations by the Caribbean regime."

Assimilation?

The open borders crowd tell us repeatedly that the illegal immigrants want to assimilate into American society....

"The desire to be buried back home in Mexico is ingrained in the national psyche and a theme celebrated in song. A popular ballad is Mexico lindo y querido, in which singer Jorge Negrete implores 'If I die far from you (Mexico), tell them I’m sleeping, to bring me here.'"

Hypocrisy

"Let’s make this world a better place! Peace be with you!"

Mennonites in Mexico

In a remote corner of Zacatecas state, blond-haired farmers and women in ankle-length dresses return from church, filing past rows of unstained concrete homes and lush fields of corn and chilies.

For almost a century, German-speaking Mennonites have quietly tended their crops and produced cheese as they practice their strict form of Christianity. But one member of the famously reclusive sect recently made Mexican history. More here

Live Earth

Metallica frontman James Hetfield....

"I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn’t quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don’t like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don’t wanna cloud it with ‘Democrat, Republican,’ whatever. Our philosophy is ‘think for yourself’ at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it’s man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."

Greens against illegal immigration

In fact, they are against all immigration!

Horror stories about the people from the Child Protective Services who supposedly care about our children.

Liberal Bias

By a 39% to 20% margin, American adults believe that the three major broadcast networks deliver news with a bias in favor of liberals. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 25% believe that ABC, CBS, and NBC deliver the news without any bias.

Similar results are found for CNN and National Public Radio (NPR). By a margin of 33% to 16%, Americans say that CNN has a liberal bias. The nation’s adults say the same about NPR by a 27% to 14% margin.

Adam and Eve, muslim style

Moderate Muslim Congressman

America’s first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler’s later seizure of emergency powers.

Mr Ellison also raised eyebrows by telling his audience: "You’ll always find this Muslim standing up for your right to be atheists all you want."

Strange News

Police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with a Jackson cross burning.
Bill Sanders of Jackson was charged Wednesday with one count of arson, said Jackson Fire Chief Vernon Hughes.

It was unclear why Sanders, who is black, allegedly set fire to the cross.

"We’re not sure right now of his motive," said Hughes. "The only thing we know right now is he was looking for some sort of attention."

Nationalized Health Care

I "sorta" support the idea of a national health care system. The trouble is that once the U.S. starts such a program, and people become accustomed to the "right" to health care, they will then begin filibustering for the "right" to free housing, a new car, a plasma TV, an Ipod, an Iphone, etc., etc., etc.

The number of "rights" will be only limited by imagination. It used to be called "creeping socialism" and the leftists keep dreaming up more and more "rights" that the taxpayers must subsidize.

Iran poll

Good news from Iran which reinforces the goodwill of the world's people....

"In return for normal relations with the US, most Iranians were willing to recognize Israel and Palestine as independent states, ending Iranian supports for armed groups in Iraq, and adopt a transparent nuclear policy, Terror Free Tomorrow President Ken Ballen wrote in the Wall Street Journal."

Unhinged Kingdom

The U.K. is rapidly becoming a farce....

"First, they dropped Holocaust from the school curriculum because it "offends Muslims", and now they dropped Churchill - ‘the greatest ever Briton’."

Why Doesn’t Evolution Get Rid of Ugly People?

I've always wondered about diseases and other unwanted traits....

Evolutionary theory predicts that the unfeeling hand of natural selection would lead to a culling of disadvantageous traits—or, as biologists more delicately phrase it, "depletion of genetic variation in natural populations as a result of the effects of selection."

Chief Justice John Robert, US Supreme Court (June 2007)

Sup with the Devil

Is the devil for real or only a scapegoat for our fears?

Sicko

As of Tuesday, July 10, Sicko has grossed only $12.4 million after 19 days in release. These numbers are truly sicko compared to Moore’s previous efforts (or propaganda, some would say).

People are also avoiding Angelina Jolie’s latest movie. After 19 days in release A Mighty Heart has grossed only $8.5 million. I doubt this will even pay Jolie’s salary.

Both movies are political in nature and the producers seem to have missed any resonance with the viewing public. Rest in peace, Sicko and A Mighty Heart.

Moderate Islam

We should all sleep better at night after reading this....

"The moderate religion of peace recently fired a few of its executives in Switzerland for being too moderate."

Know you enemy

Words of Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini...

"Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! . . . Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and the shadow of the sword." (1942)

"Islam grew with blood . . . . The great prophet of Islam on one hand carried the Koran and in the other a sword . . . . Islam is religion of blood for the infidels but a religion of guidance for other people." (1979)

Valdez Oil Spill

"Six years after the cleanup, a study was conducted to determine ecological recovery in the sound. What researchers found was that the areas that were not cleaned were in better shape – with more wildlife and cleaner water and soil – than the areas that had been cleaned. The chemicals and high-pressure washing used to "clean" the area had destroyed the ecosystem in some parts of Prince William Sound."

"The environmental disaster was the cleanup," said Pitzer.

The Two Americas

"Could Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards actually be right about something? Not where to go to get a haircut, mind you, I mean about there being two Americas."

"There is the vibrant America ... and the stagnant one. There is the America of ever-increasing wealth, innovation, creativity, of a dynamic economy, new jobs, new products and services. Choices galore."

"And there is the politician’s America: The regulated America, the subsidized America, the earmarked America. The failing America."

Our Northern Border

...isn’t very secure either

"Between 2001 and 2006, the Border Patrol caught 56,883 people sneaking into the U.S. from Canada. Most came from countries where a Canadian visa is easier to get than an American one. In this sector, a 295-mile stretch from New Hampshire to Ogdensburg, N.Y., the patrol caught 12,334. With instructions from a smuggler, the interlopers usually tramp through the brush to a waiting car. Once, Mr. Hipsley ran into a family of Russians at this very spot. They were looking for a bus ride to New York City."

Jordanian women are protesting this ruling in Jordan. See photo in story.

What Rule of Law?

"I think that when someone comes in this country illegally, it starts a tradition or culture," he said. "You come in illegally; everything you do from that point on is illegal. And so it’s almost impossible to get a driver’s license or insurance so you just start breaking one law after another. I think it’s seductive. I think after a while ... you don’t pay too much attention to rule of law that this country was established on."

China

I wonder why we don't do things like the Chinese. I can think of several names that deserve the same as this guy....

"China executed the former chief of its food and drug agency on Tuesday for taking bribes and dereliction of duty, amid increasing pressure on the country to improve the safety of its products after a string of highly publicized incidents have raised serious safety concerns over its products."

Did you know?

On this day in 1985, a special operation by the "action" branch of the French foreign intelligence services, the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure (DGSE) sank the Rainbow Warrior. The flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior, was blown up while she was docked in the port of Auckland, New Zealand, to prevent her from interfering in a nuclear test in Moruroa.

Fernando Pereira, a photographer, drowned on the sinking ship. Two of the French agents were subsequently arrested by the New Zealand Police on passport fraud and immigration charges. Following questioning, they were subsequently charged with arson, conspiracy to commit arson, willful damage, and murder. The ensuing scandal resulted in the resignation of the French Defence Minister Charles Hernu, and the subject became so touchy that it was not until twenty years afterward that the personal responsibility of French President François Mitterrand was officially admitted.

Hypocrisy

This man is a typical Democrat. Do as I say, not as I do.

"A state lawmaker who opposed a bill giving Texans stronger right to defend themselves with deadly force pulled a gun and shot a man he says was trying to steal copper wiring from a construction site, police said Monday."

Deep thoughts...

on Ron Paul...
Do we really need another Texan as president? Give it a rest. How about somebody from Tennessee?

on Katie Couric...
Even though she is a clueless harridan, I agree with her on the word, sputum. I don’t like it either.

from Rush Limbaugh...
(on Brian Williams and Charlie Gibson) They both do the same thing: they read a TelePromTer for 20 minutes, and play Preparation H commercials for the other ten.

Islam vs Christianity

"From Nigeria to Indonesia, Christians are under siege in virtually every single country in the Muslim world, the victims of countless acts of discrimination, depredation, brutality, and murder that are so widespread and systematic that it can rightfully be called the new Holocaust. This time, however, the perpetrators of this Holocaust aren’t wearing swastikas, but kufi skull caps and hijabs."

Evolution of Women

Good New for Smokers

"There is more evidence to back up a long-standing theory that smokers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than people who do not use tobacco products, researchers reported on Monday."

"The apparent protective effect of tobacco against the degenerative nerve disease has been observed for years but a University of California Los Angeles School of Public Health report said a new review of existing studies seems to confirm it, with long-term and current smokers at the lowest risk." Rest of story here

Fred Thompson

"Yet while Mr. Thompson is strongly conservative in word and deed, he is moderate and reassuring in bearing. When New York’s Sen. Hillary Clinton unleashes the Clinton attack machine against him — and she will — those tactics will fail. Mr. Thompson will rise above the stale negative politics of the 1990s. Americans immediately know Mr. Thompson is a man they can trust, and people of good will sense in him a firm and abiding character."

"I have worked in the conservative vineyards for more than two decades. I have seen sham conservatives and ambitious hucksters come and go. I know how to tell the real thing. Fred Thompson is the real thing: a leader, a conservative, a man of honor and — of utmost importance in facing the combination of Mrs. Clinton and a leftist media — a communicator and, absolutely, a winner."
